Kayla Itsines Workout - What Does the BBG Workout PDF Involve?

The theory behind the BBG workout plan is the same in each of the exercise e-books (1.0 and 2.0), so we’ll first take a look at the basic approach that Kayla employs.

The full workotut program involves both high-intensity and low-intensity work, done on alternating days. So it looks something like this:

  • Monday: four seven-minute sessions of relatively-intense exercises like sit-ups, push-ups or squats.
  • Tuesday: a 30-minute low-intensity workout of your choice like biking, yoga or walking
  • Wednesday: four seven-minute sessions of different high-intensity exercises
  • Thursday: 30 minutes of low-intensity work, which can be completely different from what you did on Tuesday

And so on. You get one day off per week. Each daily session only lasts for thirty minutes and the difficulty of the exercises increases as the weeks pass, so you’re not challenged to do “too much too fast” and you’re not likely to get bored.

The Kayla Itsines guide schedule is intelligently designed to simulate the very-popular HIIT (high-intensity interval training) programs that are used by trainers and gyms around the world to maximize cardio health and fat burning. But instead of several weekly full sessions that alternate extremely intense exercises and periods of rest, Kayla breaks the work up.

  • One day of somewhat-easier but still intense exercises
  • Alternated with one day of low-impact work to allow for recovery, with each day’s session only lasting half-an-hour. It’s a smart approach to cardio health and fat burning, and it makes sense.

The BBG 2.0 works exactly the same way, except the high-intensity exercises are more challenging. After twelve weeks of training with the BBG 1.0, most women have lost a good deal of weight and are in much better shape, so their bodies are ready for more intense work which pays off in even better results.

We’d be ready to give the Kayla Itsines workout a full two points if there wasn’t a small asterisk. You can’t do the full range of exercises without having some equipment at home, and that will likely mean a few extra expenditures. You’ll need:

  • Dumbbells
  • A workout bench
  • A jump rope
  • A foam roller (for BBG 2.0 only)

However, you can use a low table or even a chair as a substitute for the bench. The jump rope and foam roller are cheap to buy. The dumbbells should cost you less than $20 and they’re good to have no matter whose exercise program you’re following – but most people won’t expect to be required to lay out even a small amount of extra money after buying the BBG.
